Cognitive Learning Theory
One of the learning theories that some
influential theorists like Piaget and
Vigotsky have drawn conclusions is
Cognitive Learning Theory. This theory is all about constructing
individual’s knowledge through prior knowledge and experience. Cognitive
Learning Theory is developing or determining human behavior through cognitive,
environmental and behavioral factors. Furthermore, Developmental Theory ( logic
encoding ) and Information Processing Model ( long-term or short-term memory )
are the two types of Cognitive Learning Theories.
In
addition, Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development Theory explains that children
need scaffolding in their learning situations. Also the four stages of Piaget’s Developmental Theory [ (sensorimotor;
birth-2years old) , ( pre-operational ;2-7years
old ) , ( concrete operational; 7-11years old) , (formal operational;
adolescence – adulthood )] describe how knowledge and its application changes by cognitive, environmental and
behavioral factors.
Therefore,
considering the above mentioned factors it is very important to integrate
pedagogical dimensions and the key competencies in the classrooms. As there are
different ability level students in one particular classroom too, Cognitive
Learning Theories give a correct picture of how we can deal with those
different children in the same place and at the same time. For instance, by
guiding the children of different levels and age groups in different ways (as
per the classroom environment; eg: by attending to or observing the behavior of
individual students) obviously, it will create an effective learning
environment. We can also scaffold the
children in making use of prior knowledge by asking questions or showing
related pictures and videos at the beginning or in the lesson. So that it would
be easier for the children to grab the important points and think about the
lesson.
Thus,
if we use the Cognitive Learning Theory effectively it would be of great help
to the children’s learning and using it in real life situations.
